Dr. Shin is the founder and president of BCC Pediatric Dentistry. She is a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist with more than 20 years of practice experience. Among other awards and recognitions, Dr. Shin has been selected by her peers as a Washingtonian Top Pediatric Dentist and a Bethesda Magazine Top Pediatric Dentist.
Dr. Shin’s experience spans a diverse range of locations, settings, and organizations. She was Associate Professor of Pediatric Dentistry for the Advanced Post-Graduate Pediatric Dentistry Residency at the University of Southern California (USC). Dr. Shin practiced pediatric dentistry at a Native American Reservation in Montana. After 911, she joined the Army and served as an active-duty military officer and pediatric dentist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington DC. Dr. Shin was also the first Korean-American female to hold the position as the division head of the Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic Dental Clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. These and other positions throughout the years have provided Dr. Shin with invaluable pediatric dentistry experience and unique expertise.
Born in Korea and raised in Brazil and a citizen of the US, she truly is a global citizen.
Portuguese is her linguistic superpower—she speaks it so well that even in her dreams, her dog speaks Portuguese with an attitude.
Top Secret: she's absolutely smitten with pink! If she had her way, her white dog would be blush-toned, and her husband’s hair would match.
Dr. Shin is a candy lover, but she sticks to just one sweet treat a week—followed by an extra-long brushing and flossing session.
She has a shoe obsession (let’s keep that between us and not tell her husband!).
Among her siblings, she jokes that she got the brains while they got the looks—fair trade, right?
Dr. Shin adores scuba diving and water skiing but draws the line at cold water. Brrr, no thank you!
Cooking may not be her forte, but luckily her husband’s taste buds are none the wiser. Or is he just pretending?
An avid reader, she doesn’t discriminate against audiobooks.
Post-9/11, she was all set to join the Navy (they do have the snazzier uniforms), but her dislike for cold water steered her towards the Army instead. No chilly waters for Dr. Shin!
As a child, Dr. Shin could have won awards for her dental phobia! Thankfully, a remarkably kind and patient dentist came along and helped her conquer both her cavities (a side effect of her candy crush) and her fears. Now, not only has she beaten her dental troubles to become cavity-free, but she's also unflappable in the dental chair! Dr. Shin is determined to inspire that same bravery and cavity-free health in all her young patients.
Dr. Monica Tiu loves children. She enjoys friendly interaction with her young patients and always treats them with care and respect. Dr. Tiu takes pride in providing sedation services that make dental visits as comfortable and anxiety-free as possible.
As a Maryland native, Dr. Tiu earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of Maryland, College Park and her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. To further enhance her skills, Dr. Tiu completed a General Practice residency at the Brooklyn VA Medical Center. She also received 2 additional years of extensive training in IV sedation and general anesthesia during her Dental Anesthesiology residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Tiu practiced in New York City for 10 years before returning to the Washington, D.C. area.
Dr. Tiu is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Currently, she serves as an Assistant Clinical Instructor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and has also taught at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Tiu is a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, Mommy Dentists in Business, and takes continuing education classes regularly to keep up to date with the latest techniques.
Dr. Tiu has a loving husband and two very energetic daughters. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, biking, and spending time with her family.
Katherine, our Executive Practice Administrator, brings 13 years of experience in the pediatric dental fi eld to our office. Her role is pivotal in setting the tone for a welcoming environment, as she greets every patient and parent at the front desk with a bright smile. Katherine is dedicated to ensuring that each visit is seamless, assisting families with anything they need to make their time with us as comfortable and joyful as possible. She loves seeing happy faces arrive for their dental appointments and is even more thrilled to see them leave ecstatic after a wonderful dental experience.
Meet Ahlam! Born and raised in Kuwait with Iranian roots, Ahlam has been in the dental fi eld for nearly four years, with a deep-seated passion for pediatric dentistry. Her career journey unexpectedly led her to become a dental assistant, a role she has come to love, particularly for the joy and challenge of working with children. Ahlam fell in love with dentistry by ensuring that each child's visit is not only comfortable but also educational and fun, aiming to leave a lasting, positive impact.
Meet Alda! Alongside Katherine, Alda is one of the friendly faces at the front desk, greeting every family with her warm Nordic smile that refl ects her Icelandic heritage. Alda has been in the dental fi eld for fi ve years and has developed a particular knack for making dental visits fun and comforting for children. She is dedicated to ensuring that each child's visit goes smoothly, providing a reassuring and supportive presence that parents and kids greatly appreciate.
Danielle stumbled into dentistry through a chance meeting with Dr. Shin, who was immediately impressed by her excellent customer service and dedication to the well-being of customers, staff, and everyone else at BCC Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Shin noted Danielle’s particular patience and kindness with children, which shone brightly during their interactions. During their first conversation, Danielle shared that she was originally studying to go to medical school but had put her plans on hold while reconsidering her career choices. Seeing a potential spark in Danielle, Dr. Shin introduced her to the field of pediatric dentistry and offered her an internship.
Maritza, our dedicated Office Manager, has devoted over three decades to pediatric dentistry, drawing immense joy from working with children. Originally hailing from Chile, she has been a cherished member of the Maryland community for over 40 years.
